HRH Philip Mountbatten, born June 10, 1921 to HRH the late Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark by HRH the late Princess (Victoria) Alice Elizabeth Julia Marie. Naturalized a British subject and adopted the surname of Mountbatten on February 28, 1947 at which time he renounced all claim to the thrones of Greece and Denmark. Was created a Knight of the Garter, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich on the eve of his marriage to HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Coronet worn by younger sons of the Sovereign In 1947, the Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style of "His Royal Highness", and was permitted to use the same coronet on his coat of arms as is used by younger sons of the sovereign. By special warrant dated September 18, 1952, the Duke of Edinburgh was granted precedence next to HM Queen Elizabeth II except where otherwise provided by Act of Parliament. Lastly, in 1957, the Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style and dignity of a "Prince of the United Kingdom"
