The Late Irene Mervyn Parnicott Pike, DBE,
(Baroness Pike) Life Baroness 1974

Arms of the late Baroness Pike, DBE

This Achievement of Arms is published on this website with the kind permission of the late Baroness Pike.

Arms: Or on a cross gules a churchwarden's staff headed of a mitre or on a chief sable a castleford fine stoneware teapot proper.

Supporters: On either side a fox, that on the dexter gorged with a wreath of ivy, and that on the sinister with a wreath of rosemary proper, and each resting the interior hind foot on a portcullis or, the compartment comprising a grassy mount proper.

Although this is not an hereditary title, these arms are included for their beauty and simplicity. These arms are also unique, in that they are the only example we have of a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Note the circlet that surrounds her lozenge which reads, "FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE".

Baroness Pike was born 16 September 1918, served with the WAAF during WWII, and held many important offices including Assistant Postmaster-General and Chairman of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission. Baroness Pike was created a Life Baroness in 1974 and a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) in 1981.

Baroness Pike made her residence in Scotland until her death 11 January 2004. The Pike Barony was a Life Barony and, like all Life Peerages after the death of the recipient, is now extinct
